FENSAP-ICE: In-flight Icing Simulation System

FENSAP-ICE is a comprehensive “system” that applies state-of-the-art 3D Navier-Stokes CFD-like models to in-flight icing to accurately calculate:

  • Flow solution, CFD (FENSAP, FLUENT, CFX, etc.)
  • Droplet impingement (DROP3D)
  • Ice accretion (ICE3D)
  • Anti- and de-icing heat loads (CHT3D)
  • Aerodynamic performance degradation (FENSAP, FLUENT, CFX, etc.)

FENSAP-ICE is the first and only publicly available in-flight icing simulation “system”, unprotected by national secrecy. In addition, FENSAP-ICE is SLD-ready.

Being 3-D, fully-viscous, compressible and turbulent, FENSAP-ICE matches industry’s current aerodynamic tools, allowing aerodynamics and in-flight icing to be dealt with in a concurrent engineering fashion, rather than in succession.

FENSAP-ICE’s versatility and realism allows ice protection designers to venture beyond the limits of the certification regulations, intended to be minimum guidelines. Aircraft manufacturers that “care” about safety are already using FENSAP-SLD.
